Acupuncture
An Ancient Science
There are 360 different points over the body and each one can help to alleviate ailments linked to both physical and mental wellbeing. These exist along 12 Meridians or Channels within your body, and are all ultimately linked. Even if one part of a Channel is “blocked” by physical or emotional injury, our energies or “Qi” cannot travel around all the Channels as successfully – if you liken it to the London Underground and certain tube lines not running smoothly, the underground system becomes clogged up, sometimes grinding to a complete stop – the same thing happens in our bodies with energy becoming “stuck” or stagnate. Needles direct the flow of Qi to trigger your body’s healing response and to restore physical, emotional and mental harmony.
Cupping
Remove stagnation and stimulate flow of Qi
Cupping is used to remove stagnation and stimulate the flow of Qi. Qi or vital energy circulates through the body and if disrupted or disturbed, it can create stagnation (blockages) or imbalances in the body.
Cupping treatment involves warming and placing cups, usually made of glass, on the skin. By warming the air within the cup, a vacuum is created, and when it is applied to the skin, the tissue is drawn up into the cup. This increases the blood flow, loosens the fascia or connective tissue, and is thought to stimulate healing.
Moxibustion
Promoting health through warmth
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique involving burning a dried herb called mugwort to promote healing. The practice expels cold and warms the meridians, which leads to smoother flow of blood and qi. In Western medicine, moxibustion has been used to turn breech babies into a normal head-down position prior to childbirth.
There are two types of moxibustion:
direct where a small, cone-shaped amount of moxa is placed on an acupuncture point and burned. It is
extinguished or removed before it burns the skin. Patients feel a pleasant heating sensation that penetrates deep into the skin.
Indirect the practitioner lights one end of a moxa stick and holds it close to the treatment area for a few minutes until the area in warmed. Another form of indirect moxibustion is where a needle is inserted into an acupoint and the tip of the needle is wrapped in moxa and lit, which creates heat in the point and surrounding area(s).
